Eric Volz Update

12/22/07: The judge finally signed the release papers.

Erik was flown out of Nicaragua sometime yesterday and is now back to Nashville in hiding. There was little information in the Tennessean piece, perhaps more will come out, but I've got to imagine his escape from Nicaragua will make a great final act for the screen play about his past 13 month nightmare. The populace of an entire nation out for vigilante justice against a hated American. And he from the same city as William Walker, who has been their national bogey man--grandmothers still conjure Walker's name to scare the children before bedtime-- for over 150 years.

Whether it was Nicaraguan or US led, it took a well orchestrated effort to snatch him away from the front door of an uncooperative third world jail and into the private jet that ferried him back to the states. Welcome home Eric, what a gift your freedom brings to your family and all your supporters in Nashville this holiday season.

Eric Volz is a vindicated man, if not yet free. An appellate court has overturned his conviction, but now the original judge will not sign his release papers. At the moment he is being held illegally, while the prosecution postures and the convicting judge slips out for vacation. Doesn't sound like Eric is doing so well. He's spent a couple months in the hospital with gall stones and asthma. He could be at risk now if returned to prison. He could also be at danger if released into the arms of a welcoming mob brandishing pictures of his ex girlfriend and the holy mother. Updates are posted daily here. Good luck Eric. I am glad to see you have been proven innocent of the allegations against you.

A dark and soggy day in Middle Tennessee. How is it that with rain pouring down the air quality index is not good but moderate? I have plenty of time to stay home and ponder important questions like these. Maybe I'll get a piece or two out of draft status.

Had lunch with Allen Coverstone from MBA. He gave me a pursuasive pitch on the Obama campaign. I am still wary of his political naivite, Obama's, not Coverstone's, but perhaps that is a strength given the rotten world of Washington insiders. Anyone but this guy.

Happy Holidays.
